8 Directions (Asta Disha)

Asta Disha places any bearing into one of the eight directions, each a 45° sector, and explains that direction's element, guardian theme and traditional uses.

The eightfold frame

Before the finer grids, the classical Vastu tradition reads space through eight directions: north, north-east, east, south-east, south, south-west, west and north-west. Each is a sector 45° wide, so east runs from 67.5° to 112.5°. Together they form the first frame laid over any plot or home, and most household guidance is phrased in their terms.

What the directions mean

The tradition gives each direction a character: the north is linked with wealth and flow, the east with vitality and beginnings, the south-east with fire and the kitchen, the south-west with stability and rest, the north-west with movement and guests. These are principles, not promises — they describe how the tradition arranges a home so that each activity sits where its nature is supported.

How to use this tool

Enter the facing degree of your door, room or desk. The tool names the direction, shows its exact span, and lists its element, its traditional associations and the activities the tradition places there or keeps away. Read it alongside the 16 Zones page when you want the finer division.

FAQ

Q. Is 0° exactly north? Yes; the sectors are centred on the cardinals, so north covers 337.5° to 22.5°.

Q. My house faces an inter-cardinal like NE. Is that bad? No direction is simply bad. Each has suitable and unsuitable uses; the reading tells you what fits.

Q. Should I use magnetic or true north? Use your compass reading consistently. In most Indian cities the difference is small; what matters is measuring carefully.

This page explains the traditional principle; it names no specific text.
